Supermarine Spitfire LFXVIE
No. 601 Squadron became a day fighter unit in 1934. It operated both the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire while based at other RAF bases in the UK and abroad. War quickly took its toll on the pre-war personnel and replacements were drafted in from all walks of life and all parts of the Commonwealth to cover casualties and promotions, making the squadron as cosmopolitan as any other. No. 601 Squadron flew several variants of the Spitfire, including the Spitfire LF XVIE from Hendon after the Second World War from 1946 – 1949, when it was reformed as a fighter unit.
