The Lost Hangar
RAF Hendon was attacked by the Luftwaffe from August 1940. There was collateral damage to the surrounding Colindale area, including the bombing of Colindale Tube Station. However, RAF Hendon suffered less than many RAF stations during the war and many original buildings survived on site. However, one of the three 1918 hangars originally on the airfield was accidentally destroyed by fire.
Originally built as an aircraft acceptance hangar for the testing and approving new aircraft sent to Hendon, the 'lost hangar' later saw service housing No. 601 Squadron. Images show ‘601 County of London (B) Squadron Auxiliary’ written on the side of the hangar.
