Retractable Undercarriage
To fly fast, aeroplanes and insects need to be as aerodynamic as possible.
Bumble bees, like other insects, often retract or tuck in their legs during steady flight. This makes them more aerodynamic and reduces drag or air resistance. They lower their legs in time to land.
The Avro Anson was the first RAF aeroplane with a retractable undercarriage (landing gear or wheels). After take-off, the wheels could be moved up inside the aircraft. This reduced drag and meant that the Aircraft could fly 30 miles per hour faster than when its wheels were down.
